Fall 2008

The Fry Street Quartet & Robert Winter

Concert Cycle: October 2-4 & 9-11, 2008 Presented by The Caine School of the Arts College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences Utah State University

“The seventeen string quartets of Beethoven are to chamber music what the plays of Shakespeare are to drama and what the self-portraits of Rembrandt are to portraiture.”* Beethoven's quartets go beyond even his symphonies in the scope of his output, and provide an incredible overview of his creative development.

Community Engagement: Outreach, Education, and Audience Development

Education Outreach Training
The quartet offers a workshop for high school through university aged students on how to design and implement education concerts. This workshop covers a wide range of topics, including stage deportment, tips on how to relate to certain age groups, the selection of repertoire, and the development and organization of program themes. This workshop can be expanded into a more comprehensive program that can take place over several days and culminate in hands-on experience for participating groups.

Elementary School Program
"Concerts are Cool!"

This program begins with basics like identifying the instruments and their unique sounds and concludes with a short concert that the children are encouraged to experience as their own private, exhilerating musical journey. There is discussion and identification of melodies, how melodies are passed between the instruments, and how the string quartet functions as a team which supports and passes those melodies. The quartet also highlights the various skills one can use in enjoying a concert performance, including the creation of a story, the use of imagery, and the observation of emotion in music. The quartet uses a highly interactive, personal approach with the audience and includes examples from the masterpieces of the quartet literature to illustrate each step along the way.
This program can take place in a variety of locations that offer close contact between audience and performer, from classrooms to libraries to gymnasiums. Program length: from 35 to 60 minutes.

Pre-School Program

"Goldilocks and the Three Bears"
"An Extraordinary Egg"
"Night Cat"

These programs offer young children a freely interactive introduction to string instruments and chamber music, while incorporating activities familiar and fun for their age group, from singing to counting. Children and adults alike enjoy the varied musical selections, gentle humor, and personal approach the quartet offers in this program.
This program works best in intimate settings, such as libraries and day care classrooms. Program length: from 20 to 40 minutes.

Residencies and Masterclasses
The Fry Street Quartet offers masterclasses and idividualized workshops for a variety of educational situations, including universities and school music programs. The quartet has a wide range of experience with coaching ensembles and individuals of all ages and can also offer open rehearsal presentations, workshops with composition students, and orchestra sectional coachings.

Informances and Lecture/Demonstrations
These performances are designed for audiences of varied ages and offer a shortened version of the traditonal concert performance in a casual atmosphere. The quartet intersperes selections from a wide range of literature with commentary and the opportunity for audience interaction and questions. These programs are often used to promote interest in full-length, formal concerts and/or to bring the experience of a live performance to those who are unable to attend such events.
These programs can be held at retirement homes, hospitals, museums, community service club meetings, and a variety of other locations. Program length: from 35 to 60 minutes.
