Join the FSQ for The Complete String Quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven Fall 2008
The Fry Street Quartet & Robert Winter Concert Cycle: October 2-4 & 9-11, 2008 Presented by The Caine School of the Arts College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences Utah State University
“The seventeen string quartets of Beethoven are to chamber music what the plays of Shakespeare are to drama and what the self-portraits of Rembrandt are to portraiture.”* Beethoven's quartets go beyond even his symphonies in the scope of his output, and provide an incredible overview of his creative development.
Any Beethoven Cycle is a rare event, but here in Logan, Utah the Caine School of the Arts is thrilled to present this Beethoven Cycle performed by the Fry Street Quartet alongside lectures with renowned scholar/pianist/media author Robert Winter, as well as additional lectures, demonstrations, and supplementary events for an unforgettable journey into the world of Beethoven. Mark your calendars now!

FSQ@MIM In June, the FSQ had the pleasure of working with six terrific young chamber ensembles at the Fry Street Quartet Workshop at Music in the Mountains in Emory, Virginia. Throughout the week each group worked on acquiring new chamber music skills, earning stickers for every challenge met. The groups were divided into three teams, all competing for the chamber music "House Cup," Harry Potter-style. In addition to two and sometimes three coachings a day, each ensemble rehearsed two or more hours a day, participated in individual master classes with the FSQ, performed on the faculty recital as members of the chamber orchestra, and appeared at the Emory Deli in a series of lunchtime chamber music concerts. The final concert was a thrill for the audience, featuring superb performances of music by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and more. The FSQ is especially grateful to Sally Ross, the administrative director of FSQ@MIM. Without her organizational prowess, boundless enthusiasm, and endless supply of stickers, the workshop would not function as it does. For anyone interested in FSQ@MIM 2006, please contact Ms. Ross at sallyross@charter.net.
Friends O' Wolfgang and the Big Guns pose with the FSQ after winning the House Cup Competition at FSQ@MIM 2005. From left: Jessica, Friends O'Wolfgang bassist Daniel Tosky, Big Guns violinist Hannah Vogel, FOW violinists Brittany Stevens, Caroline Knight, and Kathleen Barker, Anne, BG cellist Mary Katherine Huffman, BG violinist Claire Cannon, Russell, BG violinist Maggie Radack, and Becky.
The FSQ with members of the Heartstrings Quartet from Hickory, NC: Abby Bishop, Sydney Shepherd, Marin Fanjoy-Labrenz, and Kyle Clark. Although Marin broke her right arm at theater camp just before the workshop, she came along to study her score, help out her group and others in rehearsal, and to have a great time! Becky sat in for Beethoven's Op. 18 #2.
The New Moody Blues: Taylor Brown, Alex Patrone, Tyler Pearson, and Lacy Thwing.
The Rock Stars: Michael Jones, Tim McClure, Tyler Hefner, Zach Huey.
The Storm Troopers: Karen Rowe, Chue Yang, Hannah Hoffman, and Storm Brown.
Friends O' Wolfgang perform at the Emory Deli.
Zach Huey performs with the Rock Stars at a lunchtime concert as Marin, Sydney, and Alex watch from the audience.
Alex and Lacy prepare to perform "Blue Moon" with the New Moody Blues at the Emory Deli as Jessica and Sally look on and enjoy.
The House Cup bulletin board! The competition was extremely close. When one considers that every sticker represents a new skill acquired by a group or individual, it's pretty impressive! |
